Blog Archive MBA News Business Majors Do Not Measure Up

Blog Archive MBA News Business Majors Do Not Measure Up According to a recent article in the New York Times, students who pursue undergraduate business majors are comparatively disengaged, spending less time preparing for classes than students focused in other fields. Scholars cite three causes for this apathy: undergrads choosing their majors by default; a lack of consensus about what students should be learning in management and marketing; and the fact that business classes are cheaper to operate than courses in other departments (which leads to larger classes). Sociologists Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa, authors of the new book Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses, point to the high number of group assignments in business courses as the reason for this gap. Although group projects can be challenging, such projects allow some students to easily skate through by letting students either focus on just the aspects of group work at which each one excels or rely on one or two members of the group to complete the work for all. Some schools, such as Babson College and the University of Virginia, are aiming to provide a more well-rounded education to business students by integrating liberal arts and practical training. Some are looking to team teaching, while others are trying in-depth, all-encompassing business plan projects. What does this mean for the types of students applying to and being admitted into MBA programs? Could the value of liberal arts skills be on the rise? Remember, a few weeks ago the Wall Street Journal reported that MBA programs are growing dissatisfied with their students communication skills. Share ThisTweet News

Ideas for Collecting Homework in the Classroom

The purpose of homework is to help reinforce what was taught in class or to have students gather extra information beyond what was demonstrated in class. Homework is one part of daily classroom management that can cause many teachers problems. Homework must be assigned, collected, reviewed and assessed. That amount of work means homework must be designed to serve an academic purpose, otherwise, the results may be a great waste of student and instructor time. Here are a few tips and ideas that can help you create an effective method for collecting homework every day. Physical Homework New teachers find out very quickly that day-to-day instruction is made much more effective when there are organized daily housekeeping routines. In developing these routines, if there is homework to collect, the best time to collect it for use in instruction is at the beginning of the period. Methods you can use to accomplish this include: Station yourself at the door as students walk into your room. Students are required to hand you their homework. This greatly reduces the time it takes to complete this task because it is mostly finished before the bell even rings.Have a designated homework box. Explain to students how they are to turn in their homework each day. To keep track, you might remove the homework box after the bell rings and class begins. Anyone who does not get it in the box will have their homework be marked late. Many teachers find it a good idea to give students a three to a five-minute window after the bell rings to avoid possible confrontations and to keep things fair. Digital Homework If the technology is available, in school and at home, teachers may prefer to give a digital homework assignment. They may use a course platform like Google Classroom, Moodle, Schoology, or Edmodo. Students may be asked to complete homework individually or collaboratively. In this cases, the homework will be time-stamped or a digital student is associated with the work. You may use that time stamp to show the homework has been completed on time. Digital homework may include programs that provide immediate feedback, which will make assessing much easier. On some of these platforms, there may be an opportunity for a student to repeat an assignment. Digital platforms allow teachers to keep an assignment inventory or student portfolios to note student academic growth. You may choose to use a â€Å"flipped classroom† model. In this model, the instruction is assigned as the homework in advance of class, while the hands-on practice takes place in the classroom. The central idea with this kind of digital homework is similar. In a flipped classroom, the homework serving as the teaching tool. There may be videos or interactive lessons to provide the instruction that happens in class. A flipped learning model allows students to work through problems, suggest solutions, and engage in collaborative learning. Homework tips When it comes to daily housekeeping chores like collecting homework and taking roll, creating a daily routine is the most effective tool. If students know the system and you follow it every day, then it will take up less of your valuable teaching time and give students less time to misbehave while you are otherwise occupied.Come up with a quick system to mark an assignment as late. You might have a brightly colored highlighter which you use to make a mark on the top of the paper. You could also mark it with the number of points that you will be taking off the paper. Whatever your method, you will want to make it something you can do quickly and efficiently. See How to Deal with Late Work and Makeup WorkReturn homework within 24 hours for optimum effect. The flipped homework in class as part of instruction. The homework is not assessed, but the students are. Ultimately, it is not the assigning or collecting of homework that is important. What is important is understanding the purpose of homework, and that purpose can help you determine the kind of homework, be it physical or digital, that works best for your students.

Tex Richard Essay Example For Students

Tex Richard Essay Tex Rickard: the story of his life. The man who was known as Tex Rickard, was born on Jan 2, 1870 with the byname of George Lewis Rickard. He led a life of different jobs, I guess you could say he was a jack of all trades. His life, or the part of it that dealt with the gold rush, was what I would say as, short lived. After raising cattle in Texas, and ruling a little town as the town marshal he decided to move on to something different. He moved to a small city in Nevada called Goldfield. Goldfield was a boom town, which came about with the help of gold, and the fact the Rickard set up a casino. Now Tex didn’t make his money by mining for gold in California or in Nevada, but instead he was a professional gambler, and fight promoter. It is his final profession that he decided to stick with, and to say the least, he was most prosperous in this final job.As a fight promoter his life was very active. To publicize the community he decided to promote the world lightweight title fight between Joe Gans and Oscar Nelson. The fight was a long one, not only was it more then the normal 12 rounds, but it was nearly 4 times the normal, being 42 rounds in length. This would be the start of something big for Rickard. In 1920 he gained control of Madison Square Garden, and in his new arena he would stage the first million dollar fight, this would be the first of five million dollar crowds. Rickards achievements didn’t just come to him by luck. He made boxing a sport for all races and both the sexes. He appealed to the racism in people by posing a black against a white. He also aroused the patriots in the country by fighting a draft dodger and a war hero, along with this he set a American against a foreigner. He was the first promoter to understand the people, and who was able to control large crowds. All in all, he was a fighter, gambler, miner (in the Yukon), and a promoter, and was prosperous in all. He helped to change the face of the west by controlling where the people went, and helped California to grow, making him a very important man in the history of California and the United States.

Free Essays on My Papas Walts

The undeniable love for one's father cannot be overseen. The poem " My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke proves that the difference between pain and love is only but a small spark in the brain. A split second of choice is given to decide whether you love someone or hate them, that is the reason why may people fall in love with people that hurt them. In the case of this poem, Roethke does a fantastic job of disguising the horrific ideas of a father beating his son behind the pleasant image of dancing. While domestic violence is becoming as common as the tardy work of a college student, Roethke gives a little insite of impact on the whole family. A waltz is a dance performed by two persons in circular figures with a wirling motion(Websters). With this in mind the poem at hand gives a poor example of fine waltzing. Sappho of Lesbos Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Sappho of Lesbos - Essay Example Sappho’s poetry exhibits an intense relationship with the Greek Goddess of Love Aphrodite. Indeed, Sappho was involved in a thiasos, a cult organized to worship the goddess Aphrodite with poems and songs. In the poems Sappho’s relationship with goddess can be seen at times to reflect intense devotion, and at other times Sappho implores the goddess to grant her wishes or end her torment. In a poem titled ‘To Aphrodite of the Flowers at Knossos’ Sappho calls for the goddess to leave Krete and come and join her. In the final stanza she refers to the goddess deferentially as â€Å"Queen Aphrodite† and asks her to exultantly â€Å"pour heavenly nectar into gold cups.† This poem demonstrates Sappho’s thematic concern with Aphrodite as a celestial entity to be adored. In ‘Hymn to Aphrodite’ Sappho envisions the goddess as an entity towards which she pleas for help with a reluctant lover. In this poem Aphrodite responds, â€Å"â⠂¬â„¢Whom,’ thou criest, "dost wish that sweet Persuasion / Now win over and lead to thy love, my Sappho?† Like many other poems, this one shows the relationship between the goddess and poet to be intimate and developed. Throughout Sappho’s poetic oeuvre we witness her conflicted relationship with the effects of romantic love. While a large amount of Sappho’s poetry concerns love, she characterizes it as equally emitting anguish and salvation. In a fragment titled ‘The Blast of Love’ she writes, â€Å"Like a mountain whirlwind / punishing the oak trees / love shattered my heart.† Fragments like this which lament the throes of love, can be contrasted with other work where she revels and languishes in the powerful emotion. In a fragment called ‘To Eros’ she writes simply, â€Å"You burn me† While direct and simple, the sentiment characterizes Sappho’s conflicted nature with love. Even a quick perusal of

MARKETING MIX AND ONLINE MARKETING

MARKETING MIX AND ONLINE MARKETING Marketing mix, commonly known as the four Ps namely Product, Price, Place and Promotion was first suggested by Jerome McCarthy (1960) and is a vital aspect for establishing and executing the marketing strategies. Let us view in detail the different elements of the marketing mix on the context of online marketing. Product: Online marketing can lead to the improvement of the products in a lot of ways. Online marketing pave the way for the market researchers to evaluate the customers need and the criticism from them can be used to change the existing products and develop new products. Tescos online shopping website records the repeated purchases of the customers, which they use later on to provide a customized list for fast purchasing. It also facilitates a chance to customize the products as per the consumers wants like www.nike.com who offers customized instructors just for clients. Price: This refers to the pricing policies of an organization which are adopted to determine the price for a product or service (Chaffey 2003). Baker et al. (2000) discovered two habits that have been used by the manufacturers while marketing their products online namely; Setting up a low price for the products by beginners. Following the existing price in the internet by the current companies. A benefit of usage of internet is that it helps to minimize the costs on search that shoppers would have to bear while searching for information about new products and services. It also makes the shopping more active as the famous auction site www.ebay.com which makes the users to bid the price for the products. Online marketing makes the transaction more transparent making it almost impossible for the suppliers to manipulate on cost. The customers can also view sites to know the best deals for a particular product like www.shopmart.com, www.easyshop.com etc. Place: The place element in marketing mix explains the way a product is distributed to its end consumer. Allen and Fjermestad (2001) say that the biggest implication created by the internet in the marketing mix is for the place. This is due to the world wide reach of the internet. Internet has opened before the organizations a new channel to make their products reach their customers, apart from the traditional way of sales helping to cut down the barriers between both the parties. The huge investment that has to be made in stores can be reduced with business taking place in a much realistic way. Entry of internet into the marketing mix has avoided the retailers or third parties between buyers and consumers making it more challenging for the existing online retailers to ensure on time logistics. Promotion: The promotion element of the marketing mix shows how marketing conversation is made within the customers and the stake holders about the company and their products (Chaffey 2003). It deals with exchanging information regarding a product or service to the target market. Burnett (1993) defines promotion as the marketing function concerned with persuasively communicating to target audiences the components of the marketing program in order to facilitate exchange. The main ingredients of promotion mix are Sales promotion Advertising Personnel selling Public relations Direct marketing The internet is nowadays being used as an effective tool for marketing communication. The internet made it available before the companies, yet another way of channel to communicate to the buyers about the product offerings. The idea of online marketing can vary the promotion mix in the following ways: Evaluating the way the internet can be used at various phases of the purchasing mode. Revising new ways of using the ingredients of the promotion mix. Applying promotional tools to serve in various phases of customer relationships like attaining visitors for the first time and retaining them as a regular visitor. While using internet as a tool for marketing, it become possible for the organization to send emails on proper authorization basis, containing information related to the products which makes it possible for the company to maintain a long term relationship with the buyers online. [http://www.sabest.biz/blog/2010/03/online-marketing-vs-traditional-marketing.html] FUTURE OF ONLINE ELECTRONIC MARKETING RESOURCES It is possible for the e-marketer to support and develop the value chain processes of electronic commerce for each and every persons advantage, as a result of the physically powerful base of electronic marketing resources. Solid effort, a number of successes and a little failures may be engaged in this process. In order to obtain profits for all of the marketing processes, it is necessary for the e-marketer to demonstrate serious thinking talents of the tactical and planned market scheduling and also be able to employ the available methods of electronic marketing effectively. The complex methods of electronic marketing is utilized in order to create value-added services, which produce results that are unthinkable in structure, even though a variety of electronic means are available to use. On the other hand, in order to get an explanation, it is necessary to estimate the present situations. A total of four aspects or issues are given below by which the electronic marketing may be affected by or may affect, which have been obtained by considering and arranging all the sustaining and contradicting data in an order: Development of technology Growth of the existing software The accomplishments achieved by combining Internet achievements The motivating force required by the marketers to provide better service to their consumers With the help of electronic marketing, a number of advantages can be obtained which include providing a means of communication between the e-marketers and the customers of the organization, as possible in a small sized business. It is required for the e-marketer to prepare and train well, as a variety of advantages are obtained by employing electronic marketing. Business Web Sites: B2C, B2B, C2C The sites which sell or market products and services even if it is the order takers or others who are more person-oriented mainly include in Web categories which are business to business (B2B), Business to Consumer (B2C) or Consumer to Consumer (C2C). Some sells to both consumers and businesses. (Internet Marketing by Barbara G. Cox and William Koelzer). BUSINESS TO CONSUMER SITES (B2C) The sites of B2C are more familiar to the public who uses the internet. In most of the industry, they market goods and services to the consumers. There are many stores such as department; clothing, electronics, food etc have their Web sites to sell the products. These sites dont have a store like buildings. They only sell their products through the internet. But not all these sites sell through online itself, the consumer buy their products from office, local store or even by telephone. The examples of B2C sites are amazon.com (books and other related products), staples.com (office supplies) etc. The online shopping is getting higher due to the increase in computer consumption in households. BUSINESS TO BUSINESS SITES (B2B) The market of B2B is increasing in an amazing rate. On the basis of Jupiter Research, the companies around the world will hike up their expenditure on B2B. As per the aggressive estimation of Goldman Sach, the worldwide spending through B2B will reach high rates in the coming years and he assumes that 80% of B2B worldwide commerce will be held online around the next 20 years. On the basis of Active Media Research, the majority of B2B sites are created for double purpose that is to sell both the products and services directly or indirectly around 98% of sites, 73% of them gives information. The main aim of making sales of the 77% of sites is by making an offline contact with the customers. CONSUMER TO CONSUMER (C2C) Majority of the Consumer to Consumer sales occurs through auction sites. In a survey conducted by Harris Interactive where The National Consumers League was the sponsor, it was found that the bidders of online auction of 83% had purchased things in the online auction. According to the report, 75% of the buyers have pay out average of $100 or less and the 21% have payed amount between $100 and $500. So in auction sites, the sellers will post their things to sell and their items will be bided by the customers. And the highest of those customers bids wins the thing which is for sale believing that the bid will meet a fixed minimum amount. A small amount of commission will be taken from the sellers bank account by the auction site if each of his item get sold. The buyers wont pay anything to the site. The best example for Consumer to Consumer site is E-bay. It is the biggest Consumer to Consumer auction site. E-bay has been a great model for the auction sites which are emerging now to help the businesses conduct e-commerce. Although eBay is generally a consumer to consumer service, the simplicity of this site is a great value of study for buying or selling the products in a Business to Business auction site by any business planning. In eBay, and many other auction sites the users will register and if they are planning to sell anything on the site, they can set up a way of payment, usually financial account or credit card that makes the funds transfer. The buyers will be able to analyse what they are looking for by entering the key words of any particular product in the search engine and the site will display products list for sale. The sellers will make the payment for listing and selling their products. Insertion fees will be charged by eBay generally around 25 cents and $2.00 wh ich will rely upon the opening bid, and a fee will be charged at the end of the auction which will be between 1.25 percent to 5 percent of the final selling price. The enhancements like featured placement or bold font will also be charged as an extra fees (Internet Marketing by Barbara G. Cox and William Koelzer). Connecting to the Web :: Internet Cyberspace Essays

Connecting to the Web The article Strike up the Bandwidth taken out of Computer User is about the way people can connect to the Internet. Bandwidth is a small wire where the connection goes through. For example, when I go on my computer at home, and go onto the Internet it is very slow and takes a while to get connected. Our bandwidth is a very small wire which takes the connection a while to travel from the wire to the computer modem. The article gives you four suggestions how to connect to the Internet at home or at a small or medium size business. The suggested ways are direct-dial-up, ISDN (integrated services digital network), DSL (digital subscriber line), and cable modems. The article also gives the prices of each way to connect to the Internet and how much money the connection would cost to run on a monthly basis. This article explains the drawbacks and advantages to each way to connect to the Internet. Businesses have plenty of options when it comes to connecting to the Internet especially a smal l business. Direct-dial up connection is the oldest way to connect to the Internet. With this connection a business can surf the web and send and receive e-mails. The way they will be charged when using the direct dial-up connection is how many times per month the business connects to the Internet along with actual time spent on the Internet. When using, there are two main disadvantages if businesses are considering using this connection. For one, the more people on the Internet the more trouble they will have trying to connect. The article suggests that the business should purchase more modems if your business is planning to use the Internet a lot. The second disadvantage is that the best speed a computer can possibly get from the direct-dial up connection is 56Kbps. This is fine if they are only going to be using the e-mail feature of the Internet but 56Kbps is quite slow if the business is planning to surf the Web a lot. Another way to connect to the Internet is by ISDN (integrated services digital network). ISDN is a telephone line, which the business still has to dial their ISP (Internet service provider) when connecting to the Internet. ISDN is offered at 68Kbps and 128Kbps. This feature is good if the business is going to surf the Web.

Writing A Decent Essay Can Be Nerve Racking, Time...

Writing a decent essay can be nerve racking, time consuming, and can be accompanied by many trial and errors such as an art project. First you have to generate an idea, which can be the biggest challenge of them all. Then you have to decide on what details to incorporate and the placement for it. You begin to throw colors and shapes together in hopes that it will transform into a pleasing design. This all takes time, being challenged to create artwork, whether it be an essay or a painting, in sixty minutes becomes even more nerve racking and mind boggling. After last week’s timed writing practice, I was able to experience the dreadful event of producing a piece of artwork, which in my case was to deliver an essay, on the spot. Being faced with this challenge has not only helped me identify several techniques that I must improve on, but it has also allowed me to gain an awareness to areas of writing I do comprehend. Let’s begin by recognizing the first area in need of improvement, my introduction. We have been taught that every introduction needs background information, an attention getter, and a thesis before tossing views on to the reader. However, my introduction failed to comply with two of those basic requirements. I did not provide the reader with an interesting hook, but instead forced the generic one sentenced background on how, â€Å"it is expected [in college] to work in collaboration with other fellow class/work mates,† right before my listed thesis.
